F-rational Rings Have Rational Singularities
It is proved that an excellent local ring of prime characteristic in which a single ideal generated by any system of parameters is tightly closed must be pseu-dorational. A key point in the proof is a characterization of F-rational local rings as those Cohen-Macaulay local rings (R; m) in which the local cohomology module H d m (R) (where d is the dimension of R) have no submodules stable under...
متن کامل“Dysfunctional Identities” Can Be Rational
Understanding the nature and sources of human identity is an important objective in the study of a variety of social problems. Scholarly and popular writing on the cultural determinants of economic disadvantage underscores this point. Some analysts (e.g., Edward Banfield 1970, Thomas Sowell 1994, John McWhorter 2000, and John Ogbu 2003, to name a varied few) have hypothesized that a causal conn...
متن کاملRational Functions Certify Combinatorial Identities
This paper presents a general method for proving and discovering combinatorial identities: to prove an identity one can present a certi cate that consists of a pair of functions of two integer variables. To prove the identity, take the two functions that are given, check that condition (1) below is satis ed (a simple mechanical task), and check the equally simple fact that the boundary conditio...
متن کاملRational relations having a rational trace on each finite intersection of rational relations
We consider the family of rational relations on words, i.e., relations recognized by multitape automata, which have rational trace on any finite intersection of rational relations. We prove that this family consists of finite unions of relations which are of two types: stars of tuples possibly with an extra prefix and suffix and relations with all but one singleton set components.
متن کاملRational tree relations
We investigate forests and relations on trees generated by grammars in which the non-terminals represent relations. This introduces some synchronization between productions. We show that these sets are also solutions of systems of equations, that they are described by rational expressions involving union, substitution and iterated substitution, and that they are preserved by residuals. We show ...
